JANE MEI

Montreal-based jazz pianist

About Jane

Jane Mei is an up-and-coming Montreal-based jazz pianist whose musical voice is grounded in lyricism, engagement, and an occasional humoristic twist. Jane has performed in a wide variety of venues, such as the Montreal International Jazz Festival in 2015 and 2019, Upstairs Jazz Bar & Grill, McGill Tanna Schulich Hall, La Marche à Côté and La Petite Marche, as well as Centaur Theatre as part of Ranee Lee's Holiday Party concert in 2024. After completing her Bachelor's in Jazz Performance at McGill University in April 2025, where she studied privately with Marianne Trudel and Jean Michel Pilc, she released Oceanography in September 2025, her debut all-originals album in which every piece evokes an element or a living creature of the sea.

Recently, Jane and her tightly knit trio have been playing live renditions of the album tunes as part of the album’s promotion. The modern rhythms and modal colours of the compositions, the chemistry of the band's interactions, as well as Jane's numerous ocean facts and stories behind each composition are bound to make for an irreplicable experience full of innovative, programmatic jazz.

About Oceanography

Released in September 2025, Oceanography is the debuting album of Jane Mei's trio, also known as Jazz Against Numerous Establishments (JANE), which features João Menegale Barbi (bass), Christina Beaudry-Cardenas (drums), as well as Julian Shively (cello) on one feature piece.

The album comprises of ten original modern jazz compositions, each incorporating programmatic elements by evoking an element of the ocean, whether it be creatures of the ocean, geographic locations or a reference to the journey the listener embarks on.
