Bio
Jane Mei is an up-and-coming pianist on the Montreal jazz scene. She has performed in a wide variety of venues, such as the Montreal International Jazz Festival in 2015 and 2019, Upstairs Jazz Bar & Grill, McGill Tanna Schulich Hall, La Marche à Côté and La Petite Marche, Centaur Theatre, alongside renowned musicians such as Ranee Lee and Jacques Kuba Séguin. After completing her Bachelor's in Jazz Performance on a scholarship at McGill University in April 2025, where she studied privately with Marianne Trudel and Jean-Michel Pilc, she founded the band Jazz Against Numerous Establishments (JANE) and released Oceanography in September 2025, her debut all-originals album in which every piece evokes an element or a living creature of the sea.
Lyricism, storytelling and band-audience interactions are at the core of Jane's playing. Her call-and-response with her tightly knit trio, her simple yet memorable melodies, as well as the occasional humorous timing and references in her improvisation bring a refreshing spark into the jazz genre. The combination of such a whimsy style of improvisation with her programmatic compositions is bound to entertain jazz aficionados and the uninitiated alike.
