Bio

Jane Mei is an up-and-coming pianist on the Montreal jazz scene. She has performed in a wide variety of venues, such as the Montreal International Jazz Festival in 2015 and 2019, Upstairs Jazz Bar & Grill, McGill Tanna Schulich Hall, La Marche à Côté and La Petite Marche, Centaur Theatre, alongside renowned musicians such as Ranee Lee and Jacques Kuba Séguin. After completing her Bachelor's in Jazz Performance on a scholarship at McGill University in April 2025, where she studied privately with Marianne Trudel and Jean Michel Pilc, she founded the band Jazz Against Numerous Establishments (JANE) and released Oceanography in September 2025, her debut all-originals album in which every piece evokes an element or a living creature of the sea.

Lyricism, storytelling and band-audience interactions are at the core of Jane's playing. Her call-and-response with her tightly knit trio, her simple yet memorable melodies, as well as the occasional humorous timing and references in her improvisation bring a refreshing spark into the jazz genre. The combination of such a whimsy style of improvisation with her programmatic compositions is bound to entertain jazz aficionados and the uninitiated alike.
